LOU SALVATORI

Aspiring to become a fashion photographer, Lou Salvatori arrived in NYC from Chicago on December 1, 1980. He was 21 years old. One week later, John Lennon was shot and killed. Standing outside the Dakota building on the upper West side, Salvatori with a heavy heart began thinking about the significance of photographing someone as important and famous as Lennon. Well, throughout the next two decades Salvatori became both a successful fashion and celebrity photographer who was very much in demand with such publications as Rolling Stone, American Vogue, German Vogue, Australian Vogue, GQ, Esquire, Interview, US, The Face, and Manner Vogue. His portfolio of celebrities includes Sting, Lauren Hutton, Kevin Bacon, Marlee Matlin, Jane Seymor, Walter Cronkite, The Neville Brothers, John Patrick Shanley, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jennifer Grey, Eric Stoltz, Kenny G, John Turturro, Debi Mazar, Catherine O’Hara, Ed Bradley, Gore Vidal, Mark Wahlberg, Florence Griffith Joyner, Bobby Short, Shannen Doherty, Michael Richards, Treat Williams, Marcia Gay Harden, Kimberly Williams, Monica Vitti, and Kathleen Turner.

The streets of the city have always played an important element and are deeply rooted in Salvatori’s work. They are considered to be the heart and soul of his gritty, graphic, and cinematic black and white photographs. During his early years many hours and days were spent with best friend and photographer Max Vadukul walking the streets finding unsuspecting subjects to photograph all while striving to develop a photographic style. NYC during the 1980’s and 1990’s was considered the epicenter of the world’s art stage and neighborhoods such as SoHo and the East Village began to be transformed. On any given night at Fanelli Cafe at the corner of Prince and Mercer, notable artists such as Keith Haring, David Salle, Julien Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, and Jean-Michel Basquiat could be found sitting at the bar. It was a time unlike any other.
